Heartfelt Christmas Fun!

We return to the world of Greg Heffley with the latest installment of the newest Hollywood remake of Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.

This new third Disney+ adaptation of the series visits Cabin Fever, a Christmas story where Greg and his family are trapped inside during the snowy holiday season as Greg tries to stay of the naughty list. Itt’s the best film of the series and in all comes together as a fun and heart filled tail, great to get young ones ready for the holiday season, while also being a fun watch for the adults.

The film focuses highly on the best relationship of the series between Greg and Rodrick as eternal enemies but also family when it matters, and also shifts to a greater focus on Greg and Manny’s relationship as Greg becomes envious of the pampering his youngest brother gets from everyone around him. Everyones been through this and it’s all very relatable as Greg balances his relationship with his family, with Rowley, and with Santa himself. The film also presents Greg with the challenge of being good after he makes a series of “very bad” decisions, this presents for fun ethical dilemas for Greg throughout the film, as he tries to be a better person in efforts to stay off Santa’s naughty list to secure his dream gift.

The animation this time around also feels more crisp, it’s not anything amazing, but it’s good enough for this format, and works perfectly blending in the classic style of Jeff Kinney’s iconic books. I do wish however, there was more creativity put into the animations, as the books really were quite creative blending in comic illustrations with text, and blending in different illustration styles. However, it’s good enough for the fun short format of these films, and continues to improve with each film, This time around some good tunes are also used, which greater infuse the Christmas, and fun Middle School feel.

Overall, it’s a fun Christmas film perfect for kids, and fun enough for adults. It also has good messages for the kids about learning from your mistakes, being a good person, and togetherness with your family. The animation style isn’t anything great, but perfectly fuses in the style of the books.
